ABUNDANCE Author: Anne In her garden, a woman can be a goddess! Whether she has a few miniature pots of herbs, a patio pot garden, or a BIG garden, with rolling lawns, she’s the Goddess of Abundance. Notice that she isn’t waiting around for good things to happen. She works for the garden she dreams of. It’s dirty work, but she loves it. The result of her soul-ful labor, she knows, will be Beauty and Abundance. She may even pray as she works. Gardening is a form of prayer. It’s faith that, if you do your part, the soil will be fruitful. Do you yearn for abundance? First, believe it’s possible. Believe that the Universe is abundant beyond imagination. That Spirit wants to give what you need. Trust. Remember, the first job God ever gave Man was to care for the Garden! Do you create abundance in other ways? Fine. Not everyone was born to the shovel. But whatever your garden is, cultivate it. Do the dreaming. Do the work. With a mindset like that, how can you fail? BEAUTY Author: Anne A beauty sits in front of a mirror. No longer a girl, her curves proclaim her fertility, her readiness to love, to bear and nurture a child, or to birth the children of her imagination. Her hands are capable, her feet planted on the ground. She doesn’t fear aging. Why should she? She knows that her Creator sees her as perfect. She is Beauty, now and forever, just like the rest of God’s creation. Her intention is to pay attention to all of that Beauty, to care for and give thanks for it. Behind her in the mirror is a reflection of how she may look in twenty or thirty years. Her beauty is undiminished. A new luster has been added ~ a glow that comes with wisdom and a compassionate, tested heart. Through the window, we see three moons, representing three stages in a woman’s life: Maiden, Mother, and Wise Woman. Each phase brings its unique beauty. Each is to be cherished and celebrated. Look for beauty in everything you see. Find it in yourself! CREATIVITY Author: Anne A violinist kicks up her heels as she plays. She thinks she’s alone ~ but she’s not. Upholding her with abundant energy are the Spirits of Creation and Creativity. They’ve been drawn to her side by the bliss she expresses in her art – her intention to create. When you dance like that, all Creation dances with you! Does your field of creativity rest in another discipline? You may be a scientist. A teacher. A mathematician. A businesswoman. You fill in the blank. Your music may be different, but it springs from the same source – the field of Creativity. So dance! Sing. Invent a new recipe. Learn to play an instrument. Come up with an idea or vision that nobody has ever had before. Make a new connection. Whatever your art is, practice it. Kick up your heels with joy. The Universe delights in your creativity! It will align itself with you in your efforts to bring forth the music that is in you. We need the song you were born to sing. EXPANSION Author: Anne A woman emerges from a shell on the beach. The shell is the chambered nautilus. What does the nautilus mean? Everything. Its life is a metaphor for her soul journey. The nautilus embodies transformation. Born as a tiny, single-chambered shell, it grows by adding new chambers to the first. As each fresh cell is completed, the nautilus moves in, and creates an identical, larger dwelling space. Over a 20-year lifespan, it reaches an impressive size. It travels by jet propulsion. Propelling itself backwards, it seeks new horizons to support expanding needs. It uses currents to assist its journey, yet swims against the tide when necessary. It’s a survivor! The nautilus sailed ancient seas before dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Yet it adapts successfully to modern conditions. Do you want to grow? Remember the nautilus. Build your life one cell at a time. Remain open to life’s currents and opportunities. Adapt to them, while staying true to your deepest instincts. Buck the tide when necessary. Journey fearlessly into an uncertain but promising future. Trust yourself, and an ever-expanding Universe. Your destiny is to grow! KINDNESS Author: Anne A mother and her child bring roses to an elderly woman living alone in a city apartment. In addition to the roses, they bring the gift of their attention. They also receive a gift. Grandma’s shining face lifts their hearts along with hers. And though limited by age and infirmity, she still has lessons to impart. Her contented cat and thriving plant show her care for something beside herself. Kindness is a practice we learn best by example. Kindness is the core of many faith practices. The Dalai Lama says, “My religion is kindness.” Mother Teresa was a wonderful example of the power of kindness to transform the world.. “Don’t wait for leaders,” she advised. “Do it alone, person to person.” Does someone need a kindness from you today? Do it! As the little girl in our image has learned, “A bit of fragrance clings to the hand that gives roses.” (Chinese Proverb) LOVE Author: Anne A woman springs from a bed of roses into a golden sky. She’s so immersed in Spirit that she’s become part of it. To such a person, nothing is impossible. She gives and receives love freely. The more she gives, the more she has to give away. What’s her secret? She’s learned to trust the Wisdom that made her. She chooses to believe in her own divinity. She knows that until she loves herself, she can’t fully love anything else. Not even the person who lies closest to her heart. “I am whole. I am perfect. I am love,” she sings to herself. It may take a while to believe that. So many voices say that she’s NOT! Voices insisting that she’s unworthy. Ugly, even. One of the loudest voices repeating these cruel slanders has been hers. Perhaps you’ve heard those voices? Don’t listen. Not even to yourself. You are whole. You are perfect. Just as you were created. And you were made for a special purpose. You were created to express love on Earth. How wonderful is that? RECEPTIVITY Author: Anne A beautiful woman meditates beneath the Tree of Life. The Tree’s roots sink deep into the Earth. Reaching for Heaven, its branches carry a rich harvest of tender leaves and golden pears. The woman too is fruitful. Is she with child? Perhaps. She may also be pregnant with an idea, a dream, a poem or song she has carried in her heart for a long time. Now, she’s ready to bring it forth. To support her intention to generate something new – whether it is a baby, a work of imagination, or a new level of personal growth – she enlists the powerful, creative energy of a loving Universe. How does she do that? She sits quietly and opens her heart to all that Creation is ready to lavish on her. There will be work to do, of course. But first comes the belief in infinite possibility. “I am open and ready to receive,” she breathes, aligning herself with Spirit. Say, “yes” to your dreams. Be ready to receive. Be glad to give back. Expect miracles. HEARTS IN SWING TIME Author: Anne In 1767, the great French court painter, Jean-Honore Fragonard, painted The Swing. In his image a lady, dressed as a shepherdess, was swinging. Her swing was pulled to and fro by her lover, who enjoyed glimpses of her lovely legs as her skirts flew up. In this card, the woman is self-propelled, her swing carried by peaceful doves. She doesn't care if anyone sees her legs. Not that they could, for she swings alone, high in a midnight sky. She’s thinking of her love. Who or what is it? We don't know. Women have many loves: a beloved partner, a friend, a family member, a child, a calling, perhaps a spiritual connection. She could even be falling – at long last! – in love with herself. Her heart swings joyfully in time to music that only she hears. She’s in love with her life, and all its rich potential. That’s why this card is for you. It comes with love… BAST ~ THE CAT GODDESS Author: Anne Women and cats go back a long way. In ancient Egypt, cats were associated with the sun god, Ra, and the moon goddess, Isis. Domestic cats were protected by Bast, Ra’s daughter. Her temple in the city of Bubastis had a necropolis where hundreds of mummified cats were buried. It was a capital crime to kill a cat in Bubastis, even accidentally. Cat owners shaved off their eyebrows as a sign of mourning when their pets died. Bast’s gifts to cat lovers were joy and pleasure. Cats can also be a mixed blessing. When they’re really attached, they don’t want you to leave home without them! Let's join Bast in celebrating our love affair with cats! They’re maddening. Independent. Infuriating. Sometimes as needy as a two year old. In short, they’re cats. On the whole, however, the Egyptians got it right. Cats bring joy and pleasure. Most of the time. MAJOR EVENT Author: Anne Your birthday is such a major event. You’re so alive! You don’t have to jump out of cakes to dazzle us. (Though it wouldn’t surprise us if you did.) We’re already dazzled! She revels in the glory of action, the joy of love. She’s also a devoted friend, companion, and family member. In this image, she’s shown as a Native American or First Nation woman who lives a life of adventure and challenge in the foothills and peaks of the Rocky Mountains. The Rocky Mountain Big Horned Sheep lives there too. Dressed in her beautiful ceremonial robes, she pauses for a rare quiet moment with the great ram. Like him, she’s proud and strong---prepared to follow her own path, no matter how challenging, and to fight for what she wants. Celebrate her passionate life and dauntless spirit! TAURUS ~ APRIL 20 - MARCH 20 Author: Anne The bull symbolizes Taurus, the second sign of the Zodiac. A woman born under this star is grounded, and embodies practical, solution-oriented energy. She generously shares the fruits of her labors with loved ones. There are several legends connected with this sign. Over 3,500 years ago, King Minos, ruler of Crete, master of the Aegean Sea, and worshipper of the sacred bull, demanded that Athens send seven maidens and seven men every seven years to be sacrificed to Zeus in the bull arena of his palace in Knossos. To prolong their lives, dancers learned to vault between the horns of the bull, and to perform other evasive acrobatic feats, providing the king and his subjects with the bloody spectacle they relished. In this image, the goddess is shown as one of those bull-dancers. Fearless, she leaps between the bull’s horns, performing her deadly dance in a still-existing courtyard of the palace at Knossos, complete with mural and the stone “Horns of Consecration.” Celebrate her courage and steady spirit! GEMINI ~ MAY 21 - JUNE 20 Author: Anne Gemini is the third sign of the Zodiac. The Twins are charming communicators who love sharing ideas. Intellectual and logical, they see both sides of any problem. Their interests make them fascinating companions. Romula and Rima are my imaginary female versions of the twin founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. Born of a Vestal Virgin and the god Mars, the infant boys were cast into the Tiber River to drown, by the usurper of their grandfather’s throne. Miraculously, their basket drifted ashore. There, a she-wolf rescued and suckled them as if they were her own cubs. Later, a shepherd couple found and raised them to manhood. The grown-up twins found and killed the usurper of their grandfather’s throne, and restored their grandparent to his rightful place. Then they founded their own city, Rome. Romula and Rima sit beside their wolf mother in front of the Imperial City. Like Romulus and Remus, they dream of founding a city where outcasts may be free. Celebrate their one-ness with each other and the world! CANCER ~ JUNE 21 - JULY 22 Author: Anne Cancer is the fourth sign of the Zodiac. Its symbol, the Crab, hides a tender core inside a hardened outer shell. It survives in the most fluid, dynamic environment on Earth. This rare combination of toughness and sensibility, mirrors the vulnerable strength of women born under this sign. A Cancer is sensitive, emotional, and spiritual. She leads from the heart, not the head. Intuitive and creative, she’s family-oriented, and lavishes love on lucky friends and relatives. She enjoys gathering her chosen family round her in her all-important home. In this image, the Water Woman lovingly touches her beautiful crab. She admires its ability to carry a piece of its home with it wherever it goes. In her own changes, she has learned to create a sacred, inner home-space for herself as well. Surrounded by the blues and greens of the tide-pool where sea, sky and sand meet, she flows with the tide. Celebrate her tender-toughness and loving heart! They are her favorite colors. Celebrate the sunshine she brings into our lives. VIRGO ~ AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 23 Author: Anne The Virgin symbolizes Virgo, sixth sign of the zodiac. Women born under this star are sometimes regarded as prissy, reserved, and cool. The ancients saw her differently! To them, “virginity ” wasn’t necessarily equated with abstinence. Isis, the Egyptian Moon Goddess, Great Mother, and Virgin Goddess, was married and bore a son. She was worshipped as the healing, feminine source of Egypt’s abundance. Perpetually renewed, she was forever virgin. Inspiring erotic love, she generated fertility in animals, crops and humans. Demeter, the Greek goddess of harvest and abundance, played a similar role, and was the fierce mother of Persephone. With the triumph of patriarchal religion, Woman was tumbled from her ancient throne. In this image, Virgo is shown as the Goddess of Abundance. Her border expresses her deep connections with the moon, harvest and fertility. It shows her life cycle from childhood, through motherhood, and finally to Wise Woman, sharing her secrets with a child. Celebrate her abundant spirit! Her love of beauty often leads her toward a career in fashion or the arts. Her love of people makes her a fierce advocate for fairness and social justice, and a wonderful teacher. Her gifts of discernment, negotiation, and persuasion help generate the harmony and consensus this charismatic lover of life craves. In this image, she kneels in the light of the setting Sun. She ponders the difficulty of achieving the perfect balance she yearns for. The border shows four Venuses. Two hold scales to measure human hearts. Two play the Celtic harps of harmony. At bottom, the scales have achieved equilibrium in the heart. At top, they shine against the Sun of justice. Doves bear olive branches of peace. Celebrate her humanity, tenderness, and love of life! If she has trouble, she perseveres. If she fails, she starts again. She constantly searches for meaning in her life. Her powers of regeneration are phenomenal! Said to be the most passionate sign of the zodiac, she’s a legendary lover. Once her independent heart’s been given, she’s devoted to lovers, family, and friends alike. In this image, the goddess has no fear of the scorpion’s sting. Respecting its solitary and independent nature as an aspect of her strength, she wears it as lightly as an ornament. Once her cautious heart is given, she seldom takes it back. There’s no more loyal friend, lover or family member! Myths surround Capricorn. A Greek legend tells us of Pan, the horned demigod with a man’s torso and goat’s legs, who preferred living in the mountains with the animals he loved, rather than with his fellow gods on Mount Olympus. He played his pipes in the hills, and enjoyed pursuing the nymphs he adored. In this image, like Pan, the goddess enjoys a moment of solitude among her mountain goats. Like them, she is sure-footed and fearless, strong to protect her loved ones, intent on following her own path, and relishing her privacy. Celebrate her boldly going where others fear to tread! Often, she needs protection from people who take advantage of her sensitivity and kindness. A Greek myth tells how Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and her son-lover, Eros, were turned into fish when they leaped into the water to escape the wrath of Typhon, the storm god. In ancient images, a cord, showing the powerful attraction between them, connected the lover’s fish tails. Later, Christ, the Fisher of Men, was called Ichthys---or the Fish. In this image, a Piscean swims with dolphins in a circle symbolizing eternal renewal and connection. She seems suffused with the music of water and life. ~ wrapped in dreams. Celebrate her creativity and compassion! APHRODITE ~ GREEK GODDESS OF LOVE AND BEAUTY Author: Anne Aphrodite was sea born. Her brother, Cronus, castrated their father, Uranus, and threw his organs into the ocean where waves foamed round them. From this foam, (“aphros”) Aphrodite emerged, a dazzling temptress. Every god in Olympus desired her; every goddess hated her. To prevent bloodshed, Zeus, King of the Gods, married her to Hephaestus, his crippled master craftsman. Unfortunately, Aphrodite was incapable of being faithful. She took many lovers, and bore many children, including Eros, who helped his mother promote love and sensual delight. Aphrodite's dominion over love may seem frivolous compared to the powers of the other gods and goddesses. Yet she teaches us that love trumps all. She drives us into each other's arms, breaks our hearts, and brings us back for more. She ensures the continuity of the human race. She is patroness of all who love. Above all, she lived her life with passion and joy. Countless artists, poets, and writers have created immortal works of art in her honor. ARTEMIS ~ GODDESS OF HUNTING AND WILDLIFE, AND PROTECTOR OF WOMEN Author: Anne Artemis was the virgin goddess of the moon, hunt and woods. An athlete, she preferred the woods where she and her virgin followers hunted, to Olympus. She was a goddess of contradictions. Personally chaste, she was also a fertility goddess. An avid hunter, yet she guarded the forest and its creatures. A healer, she was swift to avenge insults to her women or to her dignity. She destroyed Actaeon – a hunter who spied on her nymphs while they were bathing. Yet she released followers who chose to marry and bear children. To Artemis, sisterhood transcended everything. A shared passion for hunting drew Artemis to Orion the Hunter. However, Apollo the Sun God, jealous of his sister’s love and offended by her neglect of her duties as Moon Goddess, tricked her into shooting Orion. She set him among the stars where he can be seen today. Artemis never fell in love again. She returned to the moon, the hunt, and the woods - and to the women she cherished and protected. ATHENA ~ GODDESS OF WOMEN'S WISDOM Author: Anne Athena is a role model for women who live in a man’s world. She functioned beautifully in a patriarchal society, yet remained grounded in woman’s wisdom. She sprang, fully grown and clad in armor, from the head of her father, Zeus, who suffered birth pangs of a splitting headache. To relieve his pain, Hephaestus, his master craftsman, cracked the king’s skull with an axe, releasing the new warrior. She became Zeus’ favorite child. Thereafter, Athena identified strongly with men. Thanks to her, Perseus defeated Medusa, whose severed head Athena fixed on her shield. She became a goddess of war, fighting to defend the state and her father. Because of her zeal for justice, Nike, winged victory, supported her. The virgin goddess sponsored agriculture and navigation for men, and domestic arts for women. She protected families. Her patience had limits, however. Challenged by proud Arachne to a weaving contest, Athena turned her into a spider so that she and her descendents could weave forever. Athena became patroness of Greece's greatest city because of her gift to its citizen of the olive tree. This simple gift, providing food, cooking oil, and wood for building, won her the people’s love. They named their city “Athens” after her, and built the world’s most beautiful temple, the Parthenon (Room of the Maiden) atop the Acropolis, in her honor. BAST ~ THE EGYPTIAN CAT GODDESS Author: Anne Bast, daughter of the Egyptian sun god, Ra, is both a moon and a sun goddess. Promoter of sensuality and fertility, she brings health and healing, protects homes, and helps pregnant women. Portrayed as a cat or woman with a cat’s head, she’s the goddess of music and dance, who carries the sistrum - a rattle used to make music in ancient times. The worship of Bast began around 3,500 B.C. By 950 B.C., her cult became the state religion when the city of Bubastis, where her temple stood, became capital of Lower Egypt. More wine was consumed at her pleasure-seeking festival than at any other time of year. Bast and the Egyptians adored cats. Like Bast, cats could see in the dark, and protected Egyptian homes from thieves, vermin and snakes. Hundreds of felines lived in Bast’s temple. After death, they were mummified, and placed in vaults so they could “be with Bast” forever. Families that didn’t own a cat could still invoke her protection by keeping an amulet or statue of her in their home. Many did both. Bast was beloved by her followers. BRIGID ~ THE TRIPLE GODDESS ~ IMBOLC Author: Anne Imbolc is the 2nd of four Pagan Sabbats dividing the Celtic year into four seasons. Celebrated on February 1st or 2nd, it’s a spring festival. The name Imbolc comes from the Druid word “oimelc,” meaning “ewe’s milk”. The birth of lambs was a sign of returning spring. Imbolc was also known as Brigid’s Day. Brigid is a Celtic triple goddess of fire. A Sun Goddess, she presides over hearth and forge. She inspires poets, musicians, artists and craftswomen, nurtures crops, livestock and nature, generates fertility, and assists at childbirth. She is a mistress of divination whose sacred wells bring healing and glimpses into the future. Swans accompany her. Her special animal, the domestic cow, reflects her concern for feeding families. In 453 AD, the Church transformed her into St. Brigid, and gave her a new biography. A convent was founded in Kildare where the saint lived with her sisters, tending her eternal flame until her death on February 1st (Imbolc!) of 525 AD. In 1960, St. Brigid was decanonized. However, on Imbolc of 1993, the Daughters of the Flame relit a fire in honor of the goddess. Brigid's flame burns forever in the hearts of those who love her. CERRIDWEN ~ SAMHAIN/HALLOWEEN Author: Anne Celebrated on October 31st, Samhain or Halloween is the greatest of the four Pagan Sabbats dividing the ancient calendar into four seasons. Samhain means “end of summer.” It’s magical! Samhain was the Celtic New Year, a time of gathering in for pastoral folk, crops and animals. Survival depended on the harvest and on a tightly knit community. On this mysterious night of turning from the old year to the new, the veils between the natural and supernatural worlds grew thin. Ghosts of ancestors, heroes, heroines, villains, and otherworldly creatures, returned to Earth. Leprechauns appeared. Trees may have talked. Samhain was also a night of reflection, and making resolutions for the future. In this image, instead of a witch, we have Cerridwen, the wise Welsh triple goddess. Celebrated as keeper of the cauldron, she’s revered as the goddess of inspiration, rebirth, and divination. On this night of introspection and new directions, Cerridwen embodies the spirit of Samhain as she looks deep into her cauldron of water to see what the future may bring. She is focused and unafraid. So may we be. DEMETER ~ GREEK GODDESS OF AGRICULTURE, AND FIERCE MOTHER Author: Anne Demeter, goddess of agriculture, was devoted to her daughter, Persephone, and to the Earth. But Hades, King of the Underworld, kidnapped Persephone and took her to his kingdom. Nobody knew where she was. Devastated, Demeter abandoned the world to search for her child. Crops failed. Animals died. People perished. Their cries for help went unanswered. When Demeter discovered that Hades had taken Persephone to the Underworld, she demanded that Zeus, King of the Gods, force Hades to give her back. Hades refused, saying that since she had eaten seven pomegranate seeds ~ symbolizing marriage in the ancient world, she belonged to him. Zeus compromised. Persephone would spend 8 months of the year with her mother, 3 months with Hades. She would return to her husband only after Harvest. Their joyous reunion made the world fruitful again, and produced an abundant harvest. When Persephone returned to Hades, winter arrived. But people endured, trusting that Demeter’s blessing would be restored in Spring. GAIA ~ GREEK MOTHER OF ALL Author: Anne Gaia’s story mirrors all great creation myths, but emphasizes the Mother. In the beginning was Kaos – void and tumult. Gaia emerged from the emptiness together with Eros, the generative principle. From nothing, she created the world. She birthed the seas and mountains, and created Uranus, the heavens, to be her son and husband. Uranus covered her and fathered a host of mythic offspring. Father and progeny then fought amongst themselves for supremacy. Throughout this great tumult, Gaia, Mother Earth, birthed children of every kind, and protected them all as best she could. All children are beautiful to her. Gaia is the primordial element from which springs everything that lives. Everything that lives is of her, and to her it shall return. She is first and last, and everything in between. Her worship declined for thousands of years as patriarchal gods supplanted her. But she lives on in the beautiful world around us, and in the Gaia Movement. The environmentalist movement sees the entire planet as a single, living organism. We violate any part of Gaia’s creation at grave peril to the world. INANNA ~THE SUMERIAN GODDESS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH Author: Anne 4,000 years ago, before the Greeks and Romans set down their myths, there was Inanna. She fell in love with a shepherd, Dumuzi, married and made him king. But “the marriage bed was not wide enough” for her. Neither was her power as Queen of Heaven and Earth. She wanted to be Queen of the Underworld as well. She abandoned her power, and descended to the Underworld where she was ultimately murdered, and hung from a meat hook for three days, until rescued by the God of Wisdom, Enki. Furious because her husband had made no attempt at rescue, Inanna made him take her place in the Underworld. Restored to power, she mourned her lost lover, and embarked on a reign of terror mirroring her grief and rage. This period passed, however, and Inanna returned to creation and joy. She created a new race, in which men and women worked together as equals for mutual benefit. Inanna is a model for women’s empowerment. She guides all who descend into dark places, and who return empowered, ready to share, and to seek new directions. ISIS ~ QUEEN OF THE IMMORTALS Author: Anne Isis is the maker and sustainer of kings. She’s shown as winged Isis, who used her wings to fan life back into her murdered husband, Osiris, for one night of love. Isis and Osiris fell in love within their mother’s womb. Their jealous brother, Set, killed Osiris to usurp his throne. He lured and sealed him into a sarcophagus, and threw it into the Nile. It finally drifted ashore at Byblos, Syria. Nourished by Osiris’s spirit, a mighty tree grew up around the sarcophagus. Isis tracked her husband to Byblos, where the tree encasing him had been carved into a pillar for the king's palace. Isis persuaded the queen to give her the pillar, removed the coffin and took it back to Egypt where she hid it. Unfortunately, Set found the sarcophagus. He dismembered Osiris’s body, and scattered the pieces so she couldn’t reassemble them. She found everything except his phallus, however. She replaced it with a wooden member, and revived him for long enough to conceive their son, Horus. Osiris then descended into the Underworld to become King and Judge of the Dead. When Horus grew up, Isis helped him defeat Set and made him king in his father's place. She is worshiped as Great Mother, wife, lover, life-restorer, and soul mate. KUAN YIN ~ GODDESS OF MERCY AND COMPASSION Author: Anne Kuan Yin is the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion. Originally called Miao Shan, she was one of three daughters born around 2590 BC to a king with no male heir. The king ordered the princesses to marry and give him grandsons to perpetuate his dynasty. Two obeyed. Miao Shan, however, begged to enter a convent instead. Thinking she would tire of it, the king agreed. But she loved monastic life, and refused to marry and lead a life of luxury. The king ordered her beheaded so her disobedience wouldn’t lead other girls astray. At the moment of execution, a tiger bore the princess away to safety. Miao Shan then descended into Hell, where she procured the release of its inhabitants. Buddha himself honored her for this. She was taken to the island of Potala, where her mercy and contemplation transformed her into the goddess Kuan Yin. Kuan Yin is the incarnation of mercy and compassion. In a world beset by evil, the Merciful One hears every prayer. All you need do is call her name. Her name means “one who hears the cries of the world and comes.” LAKSHMI ~ HINDU GODDESS OF WEALTH, PROSPERITY, AND BEAUTY Author: Anne Lakshmi’s union with her husband, Lord Vishnu, is passionate and productive. She is his female energy, the incarnation of beauty, and grace. Her abundant provision maintains his creation. They travel together on the back of Garuda, the eagle. The household goddess of most Hindu families, she appears as a beautiful woman dressed in red, color of energy and activity. Her gold jewelry and embroidery symbolize prosperity. Her hands represent the four ends of human life: “dharma” (righteousness), “kama” (genuine desires), “artha” (wealth), and “moksha” (liberation from the cycle of birth and death). The coins showering from her left, front hand depict the riches she bestows. Her right, front hand blesses all who seek her. Elephants symbolize the power that wealth brings. The shower of water teaches that material and spiritual wealth are earned by continuous effort, and that they are to be shared. Lakshmi mirrors the lotus flower on which she stands. Rooted in mud, the blossom floats, unsullied by the soil from which it draws strength and life. She represents perfect equilibrium between the physical and spiritual world. THE MAY QUEEN ~ THE FESITVAL OF BELTANE Author: Anne The official beginning of summer on May 1st is still celebrated on Beltane, a fire festival. Our Celtic ancestors believed that, on this day, the Sun God returned to banish winter and marry the Earth goddess. Their sacred union renewed fertility, ensuring survival for another year. Beltane celebrations reflected these ancient beliefs. The chosen May Queen represented the virgin goddess. The May King, or Green Man, was her consort. They united in the sacred marriage of Sun and Earth. On Beltane, joyful fertility rites reigned. Couples entered the forest with anyone they fancied. They returned with flowers to make wreaths and garlands, May baskets, and decorations for the Maypole. Maypole dances symbolized the union of male and female. Fires blazed on hills. Couples leaped over the flames to affirm commitment. Cattle were driven to summer pasture between the fires. Families also walked between bonfires, certain that they would be purified by exposure to the sacred smoke. Some of these Pagan rites survive today, in modern celebrations honoring the beauty and fertility of Mother Earth and her children. OSHUN ~ YORUBAN GODDESS OF LOVE AND BEAUTY Author: Anne Oshun is the Yoruban goddess of Love and Beauty. She’s a water goddess, celebrated as “the owner of the river.” Her movements are graceful, her influence transformative. Her taste for honey reflects the sweetness of love she inspires; her favorite color is yellow. She’s bold as well as beautiful! When her people tired of serving Olodumare, Lord of Heaven, and turned from him, he sent a terrible drought as their punishment. Regretting their disobedience, they begged his forgiveness. But his heavenly home was so high, that nobody could reach him. Oshun, disguised as a beautiful peacock, flew to the sun where he lived. Its terrible heat burned her lovely feathers black, and turned her into an ugly vulture. Olodumare was impressed. He healed her wounds, and sent her back to her people with the rain. He named her “Honored Messenger of the House of Olodumare.” Oshun’s unique combination of beauty, love and courage, has empowered millions. Her dancing spirit and bold heart energizes and renews her followers. OSTARA ~ ANGLO SAXON GODDESS OF SPRING Author: Anne Ostara is the Anglo-Saxon Goddess of Spring. Her other name is "Eostre" - meaning "movement towards the rising sun." She is celebrated toward the end of March at the Spring Equinox, when days are brighter and growing longer. She points the way to Beltane, the great and joyous festival of coming Summer. Ostara is a fertility Goddess, the northern counterpart of Astarte and Ishtar. She is associated with the Moon Hare or rabbit, eggs, Dawn, and the East - all symbolizing her primary qualities of bringing birth, rebirth and renewal to a winter-weary world. In modern times, we have transformed Ostara's sacred rabbits and eggs into the secular Easter bunny, and colored and chocolate Easter eggs that delight children and grownups alike. Ostara's deep femininity is reflected in the fact that our word for the female hormone, estrogen, is derived from her name. PERSEPHONE ~ THE MAIDEN, QUEEN OF THE UNDERWORLD Author: Anne Persephone was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, Goddess of the Harvest. Hades, God of the Underworld, kidnapped and carried her off to his dark kingdom. He forced her to marry him – with the tacit consent of her father. Demeter abandoned her care for the world, and searched tirelessly for her lost child. When she discovered where she was, she made Zeus order Hades to give her back. Realizing that, if he didn’t, all life on Earth would perish, Zeus complied. On the eve of her departure, Hades tempted Persephone with a pomegranate ~ symbol of marriage in ancient Greece. Foolishly, she swallowed a few seeds, and her fate was sealed. She could spend spring, summer, and autumn with her mother, but was obliged to return to Hades every winter. Persephone learned to straddle two worlds. On Earth, she walked in light, eternal daughter of an awesome goddess. In the Underworld, she was Queen – a guide to new arrivals who needed her help. In her, dark and light found balance. She survived the horror of abduction and forced marriage to become a wiser, more powerful woman. SKADI ~ VIKING GODDESS OF WINTER Author: Anne Skadi, the Viking Goddess of Winter, was born into the heroic world of Asgard, legendary home of the fierce Norse gods, and of slain heroes. A formidable warrior and hunter, she is a force to be reckoned with! Truly the goddess of winter, she skis, snowshoes, and revels in the snow and ice of the mountains! She is the perfect goddess for everyone who loves winter sports ~ and for those who have lived through one of the coldest winters on record. In this image, her friend, the wolf, who is as much at home in a winter wonderland as she is, accompanies her. In the dark of winter, let us embrace Skadi’s wild, untamed spirit, and her ability to thrive and enjoy her life, no matter what the weather! SPA GODDESS Author: Anne How delicious to go to a spa! Spas have always been centers for the healing and nourishing of mind, body, and spirit. The idea isn’t new. Ancient Greeks, Romans, Mesopotamians, Minoans and Egyptians sought health and healing in hot baths as early as 500 BC. And who hasn’t heard of Cleopatra and her famous baths in ass's milk? The spa tradition continues today, and is growing. Even the busiest Modern Goddess craves a bit of pampering now and then. A relaxing session at your local spa can do much to alleviate the stress of life in the 21st century. If you haven't already been to a spa, you're in for a treat. Exercise and fitness classes, hot tubs and steam rooms, massage and bodywork, manicures, pedicures, facials, or a new hairstyle will make you feel like the goddess you truly are. Indulge yourself! Or if you find it difficult to do that, see if a loved one or friend would like to spoil you with a Spa Experience for your next special day. They might be grateful for the hint. YOU'RE A GODDESS! Author: Anne In the shadow of a Greek temple, a priest exhorts the multitude to worship a trio of dancing nymphs. They’re super-slim ~ the embodiment of recent and current fashion standards in the Land of Thin. He’s the ancient equivalent of today’s Priests of Public Opinion, who try to mold our perceptions of beauty into a single vision. Fortunately, things are changing. A broader spectrum of beauty is being appreciated. In this image, the people aren’t swayed by the rhetoric. Their eyes turn toward the goddess who lounges at the foot of a tree. How relaxed and comfortable she is! She reminds us of who and what we are. Gorgeous. A legend in our own time. Just as we are. Who can resist our reality? THE GREEN MAN Author: Anne The Green Man symbolizes “irrepressible life.” He's Father Earth, the Pagan god of vegetation and fertility – the fruitful season’s male counterpart to Gaia. Without him, there would be no life. All living creatures depend on the fertility of the soil from which he emerges in spring, and to which he returns at summer’s end. He is Lord of the Harvest, bringing abundance and prosperity to his people. As the god who is born, dies and is born again, he’s the archetype of renewal and resurrection – a central theme of later world religions. His worship dates back to prehistoric times. His image appears in cultures ranging from Egypt to India, and throughout Europe. Transcending his pagan roots, he’s discovered in chiseled stones at Stonehenge and Avebury, and in exquisite carvings in Gothic, Romanesque and Renaissance cathedrals. There, his image is coupled with that of Christ, Mary, and all the saints. The church absorbed him into their sacred spaces, knowing that the rural folk loved him. The Green Man is alive in every age. Look for him in every leaf and blade of grass. HERNE THE HUNTER Author: Anne Herne, the Hunter, symbolizes male power and fertility. He’s the Divine Masculine, lover of the Divine Feminine, who reigns from summer’s end through winter. He provides by his skills as a warrior and hunter. There is a dark aspect to Herne. As hunter, he is both giver and taker of life. He cares for all animals, but will kill to protect or to feed his people. Mounted on his stallion, accompanied by horned serpents, symbolizing his virility and powers of regeneration, he escorts the dead to the Underworld. Legend tells us he was King Richard II’s huntsman. While protecting the king, he was mortally wounded by a cornered deer. He paid a terrible price ~ the loss of his hunting skills ~ for his resuscitation by a magician, who tied the dead animal’s horns onto his head. Desolate over this loss, Herne hung himself, the horns still on his head. Some believe his ghost haunts Windsor Forest to this day. Herne is linked to the horned Celtic god, Cernunnos. As Herne/Cernunnos, he is God of the Wild, God of Plenty. Powerful and protective, he is a noble partner for the Great Goddess. SAFE IN LOVE Author: Anne Many wish they could be safe in love. I cherish and honor you for all of your wonderful qualities. Among them is your loving commitment to your children. EVE ~ THE MOTHER OF ALL Author: Anne Scripture tells that God created Eve from one of Adam’s ribs to be his helper. Naked and innocent as children, they lived in the Garden of Eden. Only the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was forbidden. If they ate that, God warned, they would die. The serpent tempted Eve. “You won’t die!” he scoffed. “You'll become like God, knowing good and evil.” Eve ate, shared the fruit with Adam, and their innocence ended. Realizing that they were naked, they sewed fig leaf coverings, and hid from God. God’s judgment was swift. His cherubim drove them out with flaming swords. Henceforth, Adam would earn bread “by the sweat of his brow.” Eve would bear children in pain and be ruled by her husband. As for the serpent, he would crawl on his belly and be hated by woman and her seed. Beyond Eden, Adam and Eve learned to live as adults. Adam farmed; Eve bore her children, and experienced the joys and sadnesses of motherhood. Her descendents culminated in the birth of Jesus Christ and beyond. MAKEDA ~ QUEEN OF SHEBA Author: Anne Makeda was the queen of Sheba or Saba, located in present day Yemen or Ethiopia. From this ancient city, she journeyed to Jerusalem where she met the most powerful monarch of her day, King Solomon. Scripture tells us she went to learn from Solomon’s fabled wisdom. History teaches that she had other things in mind as well: political and trade alliances to bring peace and prosperity to her people. She brought rich gifts from Sheba. A dark, Ethiopian beauty, she also captured the king’s heart. One of the most famous love poems in the English language, The Song of Solomon, he wrote for her. Some believe he asked Makeda to marry and remain with him always. Instead, Makeda returned to Sheba, where she gave birth to a son, traditionally thought to be Solomon’s. Why did she go home? To care for her people. Also, in patriarchal Israel, she would have been one among many of the king’s queens and concubines. In Sheba, she ruled as queen! Makeda knew where her best and highest interests lay. She was true to her great destiny. QUEEN ESTHER ~ SAVIOR OF HER PEOPLE Author: Anne Esther’s story begins in the palace of Ahasuerus, king of the powerful Persian empire. Ahasuerus cast off his old queen, Vashti, and chose Esther, a Jewish beauty, to replace her. Her uncle, Mordecai, warned Esther to keep her race a secret. Haman, the king’s prime minister, hated Mordecai who refused to bow down to him. He persuaded the king to issue an edict allowing the massacre of the Jews. Mordecai asked Esther to intervene. It was forbidden to approach the king, uninvited, on pain of death, but she found the courage to do it. Welcomed by her husband, she invited him and Haman to dinner that evening. Emboldened by this mark of favor, and believing that the king intended to honor him, Haman had a gallows built to hang Mordecai. However, at a second dinner party, he learned that the king intended to honor Mordecai, not him ~ for saving his life many years before. Esther then accused Haman of orchestrating the murder of her uncle, her people, and herself. The enraged monarch hung Haman from the gallows he had built for Mordecai, and gave the Jews permission to defend themselves. Afterwards, Mordecai became the king’s trusted minister. Esther lived, a beloved queen, regarded as the savior of her people. RUTH Author: Anne Ruth was a young Moabite widow. She, her mother-in-law, Naomi, and her sister-in-law, Orpah, had all lost their husbands. Destitute, Naomi decided to return to her hometown of Bethlehem, to seek help. She told her daughters-in-law to return to their parents’ homes to find new husbands. Orpah departed, but Ruth refused. Instead, she supported Naomi in Bethlehem by gleaning barley left in the fields for the poor. The labor was backbreaking, but she never complained. Her selfless love for her mother-in-law impressed everyone, and attracted Boaz, a wealthy kinsman of Naomi’s. Naomi arranged Ruth’s future. She told her to go to Boaz’s barn on harvest night, where he’d be sleeping. Ruth was to lie at his feet and cover herself with his cloak. Under Jewish law, this gesture amounted to a claim on his protection and care. Ruth obeyed. Waking to discover her there, Boaz hurried to the city gate where he redeemed Naomi’s small property, and contracted to marry Ruth. Their happy marriage was blessed with a son, Obed. The child was a link to the House of David, which produced King David, Solomon, and eventually Jesus Christ. MAJOR EVENT Author: Anne Your birthday is such a major event. You’re so alive! The Ukelele Angel kicks off her sandals, hikes up her robes, and gets down. So what if her hair is flying, her wings in disarray? She's blissed out. A one-woman rhythm and joy section in a sea of harps. What fun! You’re like that! You're one in a million. Don’t ever change. Happy Birthday, Ukelele Angel! CHRISTMAS BLESSINGS Author: Anne A Christmas angel scatters stars across the sky as she flies above a town, blanketed with a fresh fall of snow. She symbolizes the profound connection between Heaven and Earth. She brings my wish that you enjoy Peace and Love, not just at Christmas, but every day of the year. Have a blessed Christmas! I’m thinking of you. And sending you love. CHRISTMAS ANGEL Author: Anne The Christmas Angel flies over the skyline of Manhattan. Smoke rises from the vanished Twin Towers, reminding us of the tragedy of September 11, 2001. It could just as easily be rising above Baghdad, Beirut, Jerusalem or Ramallah. It could represent turmoil in other countries around the world: Afghanistan, Spain, England, Africa, Russia, Fiji, the Philippines, Georgia, Indonesia, Darfur. Our planet becomes more dangerous every day. Will we never feel safe? The Christmas Angel expresses our universal longing for an end to war. People of every faith, everywhere, cry out for it. At Christmas, I send you my prayer for love and joy. Christmas Angel, bring us peace! CHRISTMAS WISH Author: Anne The Goddess sits on Santa's lap and tells him her Christmas wish. It's short this year. She's moved beyond earlier fantasies about jewelry, a BMW, fancy clothes, a cruise, or as Eartha Kitt sings, "a platinum mine." Not this time around, thanks! All she wants is to be loved and to lavish her love on her chosen one. A little bread and wine and a secret place would go down well too. Omar Khayyam, the great Persian poet, expressed this yearning beautifully. "A loaf of bread, a jug of wine, and thou beside me, singing in the wilderness..." He got it right! The greatest gift of all is love. That’s what we want for Christmas! May Santa send you love, and lots of it. I'm thinking of you, and sending you more. MERRY CHRISTMAS! FELIZ NAVIDAD Author: Anne Christmas in Mexico is magical! One of the best festivals at this time of year is the famous Pastorela of Tepotzotlan. In this traditional Mexican celebration, the entire village seems to participate in an old-fashioned morality play, set in the courtyard of the Colonial Convent of Tepotzotlan. A band of peasants, led by a formidable village matriarch, Lola, sets off in search of the new-born baby, Jesus. Along the way, they’re challenged by devils who try to divert them from their mission by dangling various temptations before them. However, guarded by sword-wielding angels, and spurred on by Lola, they finally reach their goal. Kneeling, they present the Holy Family with gifts of chicken, tequila, goats, and tortillas. The old church courtyard rocks with mariachi music. The audience sings as lustily as the actors. Tequila flows. What a wonderful celebration! In Feliz Navidad, we see the main characters in the pageant. Feliz Navidad to you! Y un Prospero Ano Nuevo. JOY TO THE WORLD! Author: Anne This is the season for singing hearts and joyful noises. Even if you’re rushed off your feet, stand still for a moment and listen. Set aside your busyness. Open your heart. Do you hear the angels touching their harps of gold, playing their violins, or their brass trumpets? Can you hear the rustle of wings? Take a deep breath. Shut your eyes. Listen! You might hear the music, or feel the brush of feathers. Sing along with the Universe. Dance! Have a Magical Christmas. I'm thinking of you, and sending you love. NATIVITY Author: Anne Here’s the classic Nativity image, with all its beloved ingredients: the Holy Family, the shepherd children, the kings, the animals and the rejoicing angels. Everyone looks pleased to see the new baby. There's a sense of joy and celebration. Angels dance. Children reach out and touch. God has come to live with us. That's what the Christmas spirit is all about! Merry Christmas! And lots of love. WEST INDIAN NATIVITY Author: Anne I spent my early childhood in the West Indies - Trinidad, to be exact. I've never forgotten the beautiful women and children, the hard-working men (and sometimes whole families), who chopped cane, labored on banana and cocoa plantations, and brought on the oil fields. It was a hard life. There was much that was wrong. But there was much that was right. Despite hardship, there was a sense of joy and solidarity that rang loud and clear through Trinidad's vibrant calypso songs and steel band music. "Trinis" had a genius for creating art from things more affluent people throw away. Christmas was best of all! I remember the carols we sang, the Christmas foods, the celebrations. I remember abundance: savory goat and chicken stews, mangos, breadfruits, bananas, papayas, fried rice and plantains, penny breads. I remember a creche where the Nativity figures were Trinidadian. It seemed right then. It seems right now. Celebrate a tropical Christmas! Have a blessed holiday season. YULETIDE JOY Author: Anne In the ancient world, the winter solstice, occurring between December 21-December 22, marked the shortest day of the year. On that day, night was at its longest: daylight hours were at their least. From that day forward, daylight hours would gradually increase, bringing a promise of the return of spring. The Goddess was seen as the Great Mother. The ancients believed she gave birth to the Sun King at this sacred time of turning. She brought the hope of renewed warmth, fertility and abundance to a winter-weary world. Yule was celebrated with great joy. Evergreen boughs, holly and mistletoe decorated homes. Yule logs and Yule candles, symbolizing the rebirth of the sun, were burned. Trees were decorated. It was a glorious festival of light, marked with gift giving and the sharing of the Wassail cup. In the fourth century AD, Pope Julius 1 fixed the Christian Christmas celebration at December 25th, which coincided with traditional Yuletide celebrations. Thanks to this decision, Christians adopted and now enjoy many of the beautiful traditions set by our ancestors. Happy Yule! BUTTERFLY WOMAN Author: Anne Women aren’t butterflies. But there are parallels. Nobody can help a butterfly to be born. A butterfly must birth itself. It must bring all of its courage, will and desire to the painful process of fighting its way out of the cocoon that shelters it, while it grows ready to take on the world. Only then will it be strong enough to take flight and enter into butterfly heaven. If you’re a butterfly, or have witnessed the birth of one, stand in awe and wonder. Rejoice! Nothing less is due a woman who undertakes the tough but glorious butterfly journey of growth and transformation. Fly, butterfly! You’ve earned it! FLY, BUTTERFLY, FLY! Author: Anne Once a butterfly has fought its way out of the cocoon, the next step is to fly. Dry your wings first. Make sure you’re rested, and strong enough for flight. Then, take off! Don’t be scared. You weren’t born to crawl on the ground. You were born with wings! So spread your wings and fly. That’s what butterflies do! CONGRATULATIONS! Author: Anne Congratulations are in order. You’ve accomplished something magnificent! Let’s celebrate. You deserve it! That's why The All Star Person in this image is standing in front of a peacock. She has every right to be peacock-proud of her achievement. It’s time to shine. Let’s shout it from the rooftops. YOU DID IT! Congratulations! FOLLOW YOUR BLISS! Author: Anne Joseph Campbell, author of "The Power of Myth," was a great authority on mythology. A professor for almost 40 years, he was beloved by his students. His constant advice to women was to "follow your bliss!" In this image, a princess leans wearily on the windowsill of a castle she shares with a treasure-hoarding dragon. Beautifully dressed and coiffed, rich, secure and safe, her days are devoid of color and passion. She is cut off from life. A climbing rose has traveled up the stone walls of the palace that's become a prison. On its topmost branches, a bluebird sings. What beauty and freedom! What will she do? Choose to live her life with passion and joy, or follow the path of least resistance? The choice is hers. There is risk in any decision. The bird cries “Follow your bliss!” You've only got one life to live. As Joseph Campbell says, "Pay attention to it!" RUNAWAY PRINCESS Author: Anne A runaway princess has made a bold decision. Capering down the hillside, she casts her crown, jewels, and shoes aside to "follow her bliss." She abandons dragon, castle and gold for something new. Who is the dragon in the castle? Someone who controls her? A need for security at any price? Or is he that part of her soul that fears pursuing what she truly needs? Only the princess knows. But she has chosen the path of risk and adventure. Will she live happily ever after? There are no guarantees! Real Life isn't a fairy tale. There’ll be bumps along the road. But one thing is certain. Unless she leaves the safety of her golden cage, she’ll never find out what she can really do. You have only one life to live. As Joseph Campbell says, “Pay attention to it!” JUMP FOR JOY! You have to look inside to see the deep heart connection. There are biological families, and families of the heart. These friends are sisters of the heart. They chose each other. I’m so glad we chose each other! My heart loves to think of you. LEAPFROG! Author: Anne Remember when we were little? We wanted to play! All we needed was time, and a few square feet of ground where we could do somersaults, cartwheels, and play leapfrog. The point was to GO! To feel free, for a moment, of the pull of Earth, and the need to behave. Our Leapfrog Days may be just a memory now. A thousand responsibilities: a home, a job, family, friends, and other people’s expectations and needs conspire to tie us down. Still, inside every woman lives a little girl who wants to come out and play. Let’s play! It doesn’t have to be leapfrog. But let’s do something to put a grin on our faces and a skip in our step. Let’s make a play date! Your house or mine? DO WE HAVE TO GROW UP YET? Author: Anne Do we have to grow up yet? Of course. But not totally. We’re MEANT to have fun! Besides. It’s great to watch the expression on children’s faces when grown-ups play. They love to learn that you’re never too old to be young. Want to come out to play? I’ll be your best friend…. ALL GOOD DOGS GO TO HEAVEN Author: Anne Through her tears, a little girl asked, "Where did Patch go?" She had just lost her beloved puppy. What could I say? "All good dogs go to Heaven," I said, remembering my own lost friend, Woofer. Can you imagine a Heaven without pets? No orthodox faith seems to have addressed the problem of the loss of a faithful animal friend and companion. I only know that Patch and Woofer were good dogs. They lived a Heaven on Earth while they were here with us. They gave us joy. I believe there's a place in Heaven for all Good Dogs. Even if it's just a corner. PUPPY LOVE Author: Anne Is anything on Earth more adorable than a new puppy? Puppies are a little bit of Heaven. That’s why we love and spoil them so. Nothing is too good for a friend who gives us unconditional love. And endless joy! CAT LOVE Author: Anne Women and cats go back a long way. Cats can be a mixed blessing, however. When they’re really attached, they don’t want you to leave home without them! Still, let’s celebrate our love affair with cats! They’re maddening. Independent. Infuriating. Sometimes as needy as a two year old. In short, they’re cats. On the whole, however, the Egyptians got it right. Cats bring joy and pleasure. Most of the time. HOME ALONE Author: Anne Cats can be demanding! Catty-Puss refused to be left out of anything. His favorite resting place, from birth, was on his mistress’s shoulder. As he grew bigger, this meant that he progressed from being an adorable fuzz-ball nestled beneath her ear, to a humungous cat-stole that wrapped round her neck and hung down her chest, like one of those scary fox fur pieces our mothers and grandmothers used to wear. Only Catty-Puss was alive. He purred like a jumbo jet, making it impossible for her to think when he was draped around her. Still, she seldom had the heart - or the determination - to dislodge him. She still misses him. Only a true cat lover will understand that, or this image. Cats! Can’t live with them. Can’t live without them… YOU'RE NOT ALONE Author: Anne The Beautiful Dancer dances as if her life depends upon it. Because it does. Cancer is tough. But so are you! You're not alone. Doctors, loved ones, friends and colleagues stand with you. A church family may pray for and with you. You have so much to live for! Your loved ones, work ~ your unique place in the world. Live fully, joyfully, and in the present. That will carry you toward healing. Dance, goddess, dance! Don’t be afraid. Scars will fade; hair will grow back. (There are always scarves, hats and funky wigs if you can’t take the radical chic of bald.) Focus on the love that surrounds you, on the strength and fortitude you didn't know you had. Your inner beauty shines brighter than ever. Celebrate your undiminished spirit and hopeful future. LET ME BE WITH YOU Author: Anne What can I do to help? Please let me be with you in this. HOW CAN I HELP? Author: Anne I’m so sorry! I want to be with you in this. How can I help? THOUGHTS OF YOU Author: Anne Butterflies, rosemary, and the Taj Mahal all speak of love that never dies. This card celebrates that kind of love. In the border, rosemary is for remembrance, and for its sacred healing properties. Butterflies remind us that time on Earth may be short, but that it is filled with beauty. They also symbolize rebirth and regeneration. The Taj Mahal is the 7th Wonder of the World. This monument to a king’s love was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan to celebrate his devotion to Mumtaz Mahal, his wife of 19 years. From his grief at her loss, Shahjahan created one of Earth’s greatest tributes to love. Lovers have been inspired by it for centuries. Love is never lost. Time is not the measure. Thoughts of you fill my heart. I'm thinking of you, and sending my love. YOU BRING ME JOY Author: Anne When I think of you, my heart takes flight, like a cloud of butterflies. We’ve shared so much. I'll always be grateful that you’re in my life. You bring me joy! BOUNTIFUL HARVEST Author: Anne Beautiful woman, you embody the abundance of Harvest time. You’re luscious as the fruit you pick at Farmer’s Market for your Thanksgiving feast. Every day, I give thanks for you! IT TAKES A SPECIAL MAN Author: Anne Many men have the ability to father a child. It takes a special man to be a father. How I love you for being such a man! I cherish and honor you for all of your wonderful qualities. Among them is your loving commitment to your children. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! SAMHAIN/HALLOWEEN Author: Anne Samhain or Halloween is the most magical night of the year! Celebrated on October 31st, the word Samhain means “end of summer.” The summer reign of the Goddess was over; the Winter King was on his way. Samhain was the Celtic New Year, a time of gathering in. Crops were harvested and stored. Animals were driven in from summer pasturage. People came home to ride out the harsh winter with families. On this mysterious night, the ghosts of ancestors, heroes, heroines, villains, and a host of fairy and otherworldly creatures, returned to Earth. Leprechauns might appear. Trees might talk. Jack ‘o Lanterns were carved and carried to frighten off unfriendly ghosts. Costumes were disguises worn to throw vengeful spooks off the track. Samhain was also a night of reflection when resolutions for the future were made. In this image, instead of a witch, we have Cerridwen, the wise Welsh triple goddess. (Maiden, Mother, Crone.) She’s the keeper of the cauldron, and revered as the goddess of inspiration, rebirth, and divination. She gazes into her cauldron of water to see what the future may bring. I GIVE THANKS FOR YOU. Author: Anne There’s so much to be thankful for! Family, friends, health, strength, food, shelter, work, come to mind. The beauty of the Earth, and the love of God, by whatever name you know him, also give rise to rejoicing. At the top of my Thank-You list, however, is YOU. At Thanksgiving, I give thanks for you. WE'RE SO PROUD OF YOU! Author: Anne Women have always fought beside their men. Often, they led men and women into battle! In recent American history, women have helped fight their country’s wars. Colonial women defended their homes against Indian attack, while Native American women struggled to evict colonists from their homelands. American women fought in the Revolutionary War, in the war of 1812, and in the Civil War. Many fought in disguise, fearing they’d be sent home if their identity were discovered. Women have served with distinction in World Wars I and II, in Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and other smaller missions. At present, they’re serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. That’s why this image shows a woman warrior armed, not with the gun she handles so well, but with the American flag – symbol of the freedoms she fights to preserve. Her love of country helps keep us safe. She makes us proud! MOMS ARE FOREVER Author: Anne Mom, what would I do without you? You’ve nurtured and guided me throughout my life. Truly, Moms are FOREVER! WE WILL REMEMBER ~ (SEPTEMBER 11, 2001) Author: Anne On September 11, 2001, a terrorist attack was launched against the USA by Muslim extremists. Thousands of innocent men, women and children were killed. People all over the world mourned with America. We grieve with all who mourn the loss of loved ones. We will never forget them. The poet, John Donne, speaks for the whole world at times like this. “Each man's death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind. Therefore, send not to know For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee.” May God bless all who seek to live in freedom and harmony with their fellow man. May people of good will be blessed, wherever they may live, and whatever faith they may practice, in peace and tolerance. HEARTS IN SWING TIME Author: Anne In 1767, the French court painter, Jean-Honore Fragonard, painted The Swing. A lady, dressed as a shepherdess, is swinging, pulled to and fro by her lover, who enjoys glimpses of her lovely legs as her skirts fly up. In this card, the woman is self-propelled. Her swing is carried by peaceful doves. She swings alone in a midnight sky. She’s thinking of her love. Who or what is it? We don't know. Women have many loves: a beloved partner, a friend, a family member, a child, a calling, a spiritual connection. She could even be falling – at long last! – in love with herself. That’s why this card is for you. Hot, hot chili pepper, you spice up my life. Big time. SWAN LOVE Author: Anne Swans mate for life. At least 85% of them are monogamous. Once bonded, the male and female support each other in all things. They build their nest together. They share egg sitting so each has feeding and brooding breaks. They teach their newborn cygnets to forage for food, and defend them from all predators. The male will lay down his life for his family. If one of the pair dies, the other often lives out the rest of his or her life alone. The love and loyalty of these beautiful birds has inspired legends for centuries. In you, my love, I have found my swan. Like swans, we will love forever. OVER THE MOON ABOUT YOU Author: Anne I’m over the moon about you! What a great feeling. It feels as if the two of us together are magic. As if nobody has ever felt this way before. And that’s true. Nobody else is us, and that makes us unique. But I know that, together, we can handle whatever life brings. Because I’m over the moon about you! Their delight in one another lifted them out of the everyday world into an ecstatic realm of bliss. This card is a tribute to a great artist—a man who knew how to love a woman well. Though poor, their love was rich, and they felt blessed. One day, they offered hospitality to two weary travelers who had been turned away from richer homes. During supper, their wine bowl miraculously replenished itself, and their goose, which they planned to cook for dinner, flew to the visitors for rescue. Marveling, Baucus and Philemon gave their bed to the visitors, and slept on the floor. Next morning, Jupiter and Mercury, King and Messenger of the Gods, revealed themselves. Jupiter offered to grant the couple any wish. Baucus and Philemon wished only to live and die together, at the same moment, so that neither would suffer the pain of life without the other. Deeply moved, Jupiter transformed their tiny cottage into a temple. There, Baucus and Philemon lived happily until they died. Jupiter turned the lovers into a mighty oak and graceful linden tree. They grew together as one – their branches and roots lovingly entwined for all eternity. May we be like Baucis and Philemon ~ in love forever. Here's the first verse of one: A BIRTHDAY By Christina Rossetti My heart is like a singing bird Whose nest is in a water'd shoot; My heart is like an apple-tree Whose boughs are bent with thick-set fruit; My heart is like a rainbow shell That paddles in a halcyon sea; My heart is gladder than all these, Because my love is come to me. Anyone who has ever loved will recognize in these words the authentic voice of passion and joy. Thank you for being my love! I feel as if we were born to be together. You make my heart sing. EASTER EGGS Author: Anne One of the best parts of Easter is making Easter eggs. Here's how to do it. Have your mom help you hard boil as many eggs as she can spare. Invite some friends and family to help you. Get into your down-and-dirty play clothes. Outdoors is good for making Easter eggs. But the kitchen table will do, if you have layers of newspaper on the table to sop up spills. Bring out your Easter egg dyes. Your paints. Your magic markers. Your crayons. Your stickers. Above all, bring out your imagination. Go crazy! Remember. There's no right or wrong way to make an Easter egg. HAVE FUN! When done, pack your eggs in a basket, and share with others. That's what Easter is all about. HAPPY EASTER! WHY THE EASTER BUNNY BRINGS EGGS Author: Anne There's a lovely legend about Ostara, the Anglo-Saxon Goddess of Spring, whose name, "Oestre," gave rise to the word Easter. The tender-hearted goddess wept when a little bird fell dead at her feet. To save it, Ostara changed it into a hare or rabbit, which was one of her sacred animals. The bird lived on as a rabbit, but retained the ability to lay eggs! That's why the Easter Bunny runs around bringing Easter eggs to children! In this image, the beautiful goddess is shown decorating eggs to put in her Easter basket. Her beloved rabbits wait to carry them around. HAPPY EASTER! YOU'RE GORGEOUS! At the heart of our joy is the Goddess. Pregnant with the Sun God whom she will birth at Yule, she kneels, surrounded by the tropical lushness of summer. She’s the essence of fertility and abundance. There’ll be music and marching bands representing every culture that lives and thrives in Canada. There'll be fireworks. We’ll flaunt the flag from porches and balconies; fly it high in the sky. There is no place on Earth where we would rather be. O Canada! You ROCK! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, USA! Author: Anne How do you capture the diversity and spirit of the USA? Joining them are Rotary and Kiwanis clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, firemen and policemen, local dignitaries, marching bands, floats, school children, and even patriotic dogs! Every ethnic group that has ever been added to the American melting pot adds something to the heady brew. In this image, the carriers of the flag and the culture are children representing a small fraction of the diverse people who call themselves Americans. They march under a flag that is a symbol of hope and liberty around the world. You're A Grand Old Flag!, written by George M. Cohan, says it all. “You're a grand old flag, You're a high flying flag, And forever in peace may you wave!” HAPPY BIRTHDAY, USA! Long may your flag wave. NEDA, WE HEAR YOU! Author: Anne Neda Agha-Soltan had everything to live for. Young, beautiful, engaged to be married, she worked in her family’s travel agency, and dreamed of becoming a musician. She wasn’t political. She was an artist! However, like many Iranians, she was outraged by the 2009 elections, when thousands of votes were discounted, and Ahmadinejad, the chosen leader of the ruling theocracy, was declared winner by a landslide. On June 30th, accompanied by her music teacher, Neda parked her car in a side street. She wanted to show her support for the anti-government demonstrations going on a few blocks away in Tehran. Moments later, she was shot through the heart by a Basij militia member on a motorcycle. Within two minutes, she was dead. Neda, whose name means, “Message,” never raised her voice to cry out for Freedom that day. She was cut down before she could speak. But the video of her death has electrified the world, and made her a symbol of all who struggle to be free. She cannot be silenced. Neda, we hear you! We salute the brave, beautiful women of Iran, who fight beside their men, armed only with dignity and courage. You inspire us. YOU'RE NEVER TOO OLD TO BE YOUNG! Author: Anne Olga Kotelko, aged 90, is one of Canada’s most celebrated Senior Olympic champions, and one of the oldest competitive athletes in the world. Presently competing in the World Masters Athletic Championships in Lahti, Finland, she is virtually uncontested in her age group. She challenges herself by breaking her old records, and setting new world records for the future. The hardy senior believes that growing up on a farm in Saskatchewan is one of the reasons for her longevity and health. The 7th of 11 children born to Wasyl and Anne Shawaga, she raised two daughters as a single mother, and had no time for sports until she retired from teaching. She began competing in track and field events at age 77, “for a new challenge.” Olga coaches elementary school children in shot put, and is a popular public speaker on the subject of maintaining a healthy body, mind and spirit at every age. She is the best example of her vibrant philosophy of life. Olga is shown in her favorite event, the shot put. Nike, winged Goddess of Victory, watches over a heroine who has smashed, not only track and field records, but our anxious fears about aging. WHALE RIDER Author: Anne Hawaiians once thought that whales were manifestations of Kanalao, God of the Sea, who led their Polynesian ancestors to Hawaii. It's not surprising that they were filled with awe and wonder. The humpback whale is magnificent! Between 40-50 feet long, it weighs up to 79,000 pounds, yet performs dazzling acrobatic leaps called “breaches,” as it swims through the ocean. All summer long, the Gentle Giant feeds in the North Pacific, storing fat for its winter migration to tropical waters where it will mate and breed. The round trip journey is between 5,000-7,000 miles. En route, the humpback communicates with other whales by singing whale songs that haunt us with their eerie beauty. In this image, a woman celebrates her birthday with a cetacean friend. Happy Birthday, whale rider! Ride with Kanaloa. Have a whale of a time! TWINS Author: Anne We may not share the same birthday. But we share so much. Twin of my heart, you are always with me. I’m so happy you’re in my life. BORN TO FLY! Author: Anne Today, the sky's the limit. You were born to fly! ROSH HASHANA Author: Anne Today, we remember the year that has passed, and look forward to the New Year that is just beginning. May 5770 bring sweetness, joy, peace, and prosperity to you and your family. L'Shana Tovah! LEOPARD CAROUSEL Author: Anne Why is the Goddess, Isis, riding on a merry-go-round? First, a Goddess never loses her cool. She sits on the carousel as though seated on her throne in Thebes. Second, the carousel, with its circular motion, and different animals, is a version of the Zodiac wheel that adorned the ceilings of Egyptian tombs. Third, she rides a leopard ~ the animal totem of her husband, Osiris. The leopard embodies many of the attributes of Isis and Osiris. Fearless, relentless, cunning, bold, and beautiful, it was trained to hunt. Isis was a huntress! She searched out and found all 14 of the dismembered limbs of her murdered mate, reassembled them, and fanned life back into his body for one more night of love. In this manner, their only son, Horus, was conceived. Who is the leopard? Isis or the animal she rides? We know this. Both call us to live the ups and downs of life fearlessly and joyfully! TURKEY CAROUSEL Author: Anne They say that Benjamin Franklin wanted to make the turkey the national symbol for the USA, instead of the noble bald eagle! Canadians opted for the industrious beaver. However, at Thanksgiving and Christmas, all over North America, the turkey reigns supreme. Here on the carousel, a glorious tom turkey fans his tail feathers in a display that rivals that of the peacock. Happy Thanksgiving! FABULOUS FORTY! Author: Anne You're forty? FABULOUS! It's a wonderful age for a woman. Life is just beginning! An unknown author got it right. "I'm not 40. I'm eighteen with 22 years experience!" Happy Birthday, Gorgeous! You GO, girl! REINDEER CAROUSEL Author: Anne In 1822, Clement Clarke Moore, a scholar from New York, claimed he was the author of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The poem redefined our image of Christmas. Never before had St. Nicholas been associated with a sleigh or reindeers! The reindeer has a long history with the Arctic where Santa Claus reportedly lives. Thor, the Scandinavian god of thunder and lightning, flies through the skies in a chariot pulled by goats called Gnasher and Cracker. In Moore’s poem, two of Santa's eight tiny reindeer are Donder (Dutch for ‘thunder”), and Blitzen (German for “lightning.”) And in Northern Europe, nomadic groups of people once known as Laplanders, but now called the Sami, have a relationship with reindeer that predates the poem by thousands of years. These hardy folk herd the animals by following them on their annual migrations across Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Russia ~ domesticating and using them for food, clothing, and as draught animals to pull sleighs and wagons. They're uniquely adapted to bitter winters, as are the Sami. In this image, a Sami girl mounts her reindeer with the confidence of someone who knows and trusts him. They represent Christmas, and the spirit of the True North. You are not in front because your halo slips, and you sing off-key. Even now, I see you’ve lost the words, though your mouth pretends. Up front, good Joseph leans upon his staff while well-schooled Mary clasps her doll and smiles. Kings bearing gifts, and shepherds, bend the knee. Lambs kneel in adoration. Angels fan their wings and sing. “Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright...” Remembering at last, you raise your voice ~ off-key ~ and my heart sings. Angels fan their wings and sing. “Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright...” Remembering at last, you raise your voice ~ off-key ~ and my heart sings. We, on the other hand, earn our batwings ~ by living, loving, and engaging in Life. Everyone gets them eventually. Why not enjoy them? You GO, girl! Your wings just show you’re a flyer. Artist’s note: The reason the bats are so big is because I wanted to show the expression on their faces when they notice their new branch-mates. Tiny bats didn't allow that. FLASH!
